Synopsis
When a young child goes missing, the eyes of the community quickly focus on an isolated rural moor. During the day, it is idyllic and by night, unforgiving; and in so many ways. On the edge of it a small, isolated café and an elderly owner who now, for one night, has company. The company of a young police officer with nothing to do but sit and wait and talk. What do two strangers talk about when the pleasantries run dry? Perhaps, they speak of themselves. Perhaps, things they never dared reveal to anyone else. Secrets. And it’s not just people who have secrets. So does The Moor.
Timings: Act 1, approx 50 minutes. Act 2, approx 45 minutes.
Setting: Present day, a rural moorland setting. Winter.
Cast: 2F. Margaret: 60+, Cassie: 20 - 30 (both playing ages are flexible)
Staging:
One set. A run-down moorland cafe used by walkers. Out front is played as a large (unseen) window. Two entrances/exits, one internal and one external. A cafe counter, two tables with chairs; furnished as appropriate. All props are indicated at the appropriate moments within the script.
Technical:
LX/SFX are all indicated and where appropriate/possible, a description is provided to assist. Physical effects are suggested which affect the staging and are a matter of means and ability. But the more which can be achieved to support the pretext of the required atmosphere and suspense, the better. The soundscape in particular needs particular consideration when designing. There is no suggestion for any music which might be considered. The writer is of a mind that the SFX are enough.
Wardrobe:
Both wear one outfit throughout as the action plays out in real time within one evening. There are no specific requirements for Margaret. Cassie, however, must have an authentic and modern (complete) police uniform.
From the writer: This is not a script, a story to be rushed. Give the characters the time and the space to tell their story, the space for tension to exist. MPR
